Port of New Orleans Achieves Record Container Growth Amidst Supply Chain Challenges

New Orleans — The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) has reported unprecedented container growth, marking a significant milestone in its operational success amidst supply chain disruptions. During the third quarter of fiscal year 2024, Port NOLA handled a total of 133,845 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), reflecting a remarkable 19% increase compared to the previous year. This surge in container volume signifies a record-breaking quarter, reminiscent of pre-existing supply chain issues encountered in 2021.

Port NOLA attributes this exceptional growth to its strategic investments and innovative logistic solutions, particularly amid ongoing supply chain disruptions. Brandy D. Christian, President & CEO of Port NOLA and New Orleans Public Belt (NOPB) CEO, highlighted the port’s commitment to diversifying trade lanes and providing reliable service amidst challenging circumstances.

The surge in containerized import volumes is paralleled by Port NOLA’s investment in four new ship-to-shore container cranes, enhancing throughput efficiency. Amanda Coates, Chief Commercial Officer of Port NOLA, emphasized the port’s sustained commitment to reliability and efficiency in ocean carrier services, translating into steady volumes from month to month.

During the third quarter of fiscal year 2024, loaded imports and exports increased by 19% and 16% respectively, underscoring the port’s role as a vital conduit for international trade. Port NOLA’s top import commodities include coffee, various chemicals, and wood products, while top export commodities comprise plastics, chemical products, and paper.

In addition to its containerized operations, Port NOLA celebrated a new record for its container-on-barge service, moving 20,500 containers by barge in calendar year 2023. This service, in collaboration with the Port of Greater Baton Rouge and Ingram Marine Group, represents a significant achievement in sustainable transportation, reducing air emissions and providing connectivity to the nation’s heartland.

Looking ahead, Port NOLA’s Louisiana International Terminal (LIT) is poised to further bolster the port’s capabilities and sustainability efforts. Equipped with the latest green technologies, including shore power and electrified equipment fleet, LIT aims to enhance operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.

With substantial federal funding and private investment secured for the LIT project, construction is set to commence next year, with the first berth expected to open in 2028. Furthermore, recent federal funding awarded to Port NOLA will support sustainable transportation infrastructure, reducing truck congestion and emissions at port terminals.

Port NOLA’s steadfast commitment to innovation, sustainability, and service excellence positions it as a key player in the global maritime industry, facilitating trade and economic growth while championing environmental stewardship.
