Moving towards safer navigation and sustainable practices, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Metro Weather Co., Ltd. have unveiled the world’s first ‘Long-Range and Real-Time Wind Condition Measurement Device.’ The innovative technology, a Doppler LiDAR, has been successfully installed on the Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO) vessel MUSASHI MARU, owned by MOL Group’s subsidiary, MOL Sunflower Ltd.
Setting Sail into Uncharted Waters
For the first time globally, a Doppler LiDAR is now operational on a large seagoing vessel, marking a significant leap forward in maritime technology. The cutting-edge device, developed by Metro Weather, allows real-time observation of wind conditions in three dimensions at distances exceeding 10 km from the vessel. The installation aims to enhance safety and efficiency in navigation through comprehensive wind visualization.
Fueling Digital Transformation for Greener Seas
As part of the maritime industry’s digital transformation (DX), the Doppler LiDAR onboard the MUSASHI MARU transmits critical data, including wind conditions, to shore via the high-speed Starlink communication system. This move is not only a step towards reducing fuel oil consumption but also a strategic contribution to environmentally conscious operations. The initiative aligns with global efforts to decarbonize the shipping sector, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
Charting New Alliances for Technological Advancement
MOL has further strengthened its commitment to technological innovation by investing in Metro Weather through MOL PLUS Co., Ltd., an arm of the MOL Group dedicated to corporate venture capital. This investment signifies MOL’s dedication to forging strategic alliances across various sectors. The collaboration between MOL and Metro Weather is poised to unlock new possibilities and values within the shipping industry and society at large.
Navigating Tokyo Bay and Beyond
The utilization of Doppler LiDAR extends beyond the vessel’s immediate surroundings, encompassing navigation in Tokyo Bay and aiding the Wind Crew in utilizing the onboard Wind Monitor. This comprehensive approach to wind measurement and visualization ensures a holistic understanding of environmental conditions, contributing to safer and more efficient maritime operations.
Looking Ahead to a Synergetic Future
MOL and Metro Weather are committed to leveraging their core technologies and resources to drive continuous innovation. The aim is to contribute significantly to the shipping industry and society through synergies that redefine standards and add tangible value. The demonstration experiment between Tokyo and Fukuoka is just the beginning, setting the stage for a new era in maritime technology and sustainable practices.
In a world grappling with the challenges of climate change, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Metro Weather’s pioneering venture stands as a beacon of hope for a maritime industry navigating towards a greener and safer horizon.
