Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Expands Green Fleet with Five Dual-Fueled Capesize Bulkers

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has recently unveiled plans to enlarge its fleet by adding five Newbuilding Dual-fueled Capesize bulkers. These vessels are designed to burn either Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) or conventional marine fuel oil, showcasing MOL’s commitment to eco-friendly maritime solutions.

Fleet Expansion Details

The expansion initiative involves two of the new vessels being commissioned to Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd., with Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. taking charge of their construction. Simultaneously, three additional bulkers will be built by CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. These vessels are anticipated to be delivered between 2026 and 2027, contributing significantly to MOL’s fleet augmentation.

Environmental Impact and Operational Advantages

MOL’s decision to invest in LNG-capable bulkers aligns with its dedication to environmental sustainability. LNG is expected to bring about a 25% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, a 100% reduction in sulfur oxide (SOx), and an approximately 85% reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) compared to conventional marine fuel oil. This move underscores MOL’s proactive approach to curbing greenhouse gas emissions, in line with its “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2.”

Proven Success and Future Plans

MOL has already been operating one LNG-fueled vessel since March 2023, demonstrating the viability and efficiency of LNG as a marine fuel. The group’s commitment to net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 is encapsulated in the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2.” The expanded fleet will include LNG-fueled vessels across various categories, including car carriers, bulk carriers, tankers, ferries, and tugboats.

Accelerating Environmental Initiatives

As part of its broader environmental agenda, MOL is set to further expand the integration of LNG-fueled vessels. This immediate initiative reflects the company’s dedication to sustainable practices and underscores its efforts to swiftly reduce total GHG emissions.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines’ proactive approach towards greener shipping not only aligns with global environmental goals but also sets a precedent for the maritime industry. This expansion marks a significant step in the direction of a more sustainable and eco-friendly future for maritime transportation.
