Ocean Network Express Charts Sustainable Course with Ammonia Dual-Fueled Vessel

Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd. (ONE) proudly announces the Approval in Principle (AiP) for their Ammonia Dual-fueled vessel. This achievement, coupled with their investment in 12 methanol dual-fueled vessels, signals a remarkable milestone as ONE steers towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The AiP-awarded 3,500 TEU vessel stands as a collaborative effort between ONE, Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. (NSY), and the classification society DNV. This joint development project, initiated in late 2022, reflects the commitment of these three entities to pioneering sustainable solutions in the maritime sector.

Having prioritized ammonia as a potential alternative fuel, ONE’s commitment aligns with the 2022 roadmap for alternative fuels. The company actively participated in a GCMD-led ammonia bunkering pilot safety study, underlining their dedication to exploring and ensuring the viability of this eco-friendly fuel source.

Koshiro Wake, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy & Sustainability Department at ONE, emphasized the promising nature of ammonia as a fuel, stating, “Ammonia is definitely one of the primary focuses of our research as ammonia fuel has great potential for generating lower GHG emissions than conventional marine fuels. We are pleased to have made such progress, and we will continue our study on ammonia.”

Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, Regional Manager South East Asia, Pacific & India, Maritime at DNV, expressed confidence in DNV’s rules for ammonia and highlighted the collaborative effort’s significance. She stated, “Ammonia is one of the promising future marine fuels with great potential to decarbonize shipping. We are confident that DNV’s rules for ammonia will help our customers safely adopt this new fuel type once the infrastructure is in place.”

ONE’s Green Strategy aims to achieve Net-Zero GHG emissions, encompassing Scope 2 and 3 by 2050. The transition from conventional fuel to alternative fuels stands as a key pillar in ONE’s Green initiatives. The company remains committed to ongoing studies on alternative fuels, demonstrating a steadfast resolve in the pursuit of a sustainable and environmentally responsible maritime industry.
