MnDOT Allocates $81.5 Million for Statewide Freight Network Enhancement

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has unveiled its decision to allocate a substantial $81.5 million to enhance the statewide freight network. This investment, aimed at fostering freight mobility, safety, intermodal connections, and the efficiency of first and last-mile freight operations, encompasses fifteen distinct projects across Minnesota.

The selected projects represent the third round of targeted freight funding under the Minnesota Highway Freight Program (MHFP), a competitive initiative supporting various transportation infrastructure endeavors, including road, port, airport, and railroad projects. The funding for these projects is earmarked for implementation during state fiscal years 2026–28.

Among the notable projects receiving funding are expansions and safety enhancements to key rest areas along major highways, such as the I-94 Enfield Rest Area truck parking expansion and the I-94 Big Spunk Lake Rest Area truck parking expansion. Additionally, arterial roadway projects, rural safety and mobility initiatives, and infrastructure improvements in critical areas like the Arboretum Area and River, Rails, and Highway Freight corridors have been prioritized for investment.

The MHFP’s commitment to fostering public-private collaboration has been evident throughout the funding solicitation process. MnDOT received a significant response, with 24 applications submitted, collectively requesting $158 million in funding. Each project underwent rigorous evaluation based on freight data analysis, proposed benefits, and readiness for implementation.

This funding announcement reflects MnDOT’s strategic alignment with the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and underscores its dedication to advancing the objectives outlined in Minnesota’s State Freight Plan. Over the past two years, MnDOT has actively engaged with stakeholders to refine the solicitation process, ensuring that funding is directed towards projects that offer tangible benefits to freight movement statewide.

The significance of these investments extends beyond mere infrastructure enhancements; they represent a commitment to bolstering Minnesota’s economic competitiveness and ensuring the seamless flow of goods across the state. As the landscape of freight transportation continues to evolve, strategic investments like these are pivotal in maintaining Minnesota’s position as a key player in the global supply chain.

By fostering collaboration and prioritizing critical infrastructure improvements, MnDOT’s allocation of $81.5 million signifies a significant step towards enhancing the efficiency, safety, and reliability of the state’s freight network.
