MOL and Rio Tinto Forge Strategic Alliance to Drive Maritime Decarbonization

Moving towards sustainable maritime practices, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Rio Tinto, a global leader in mining and metals, have inked a pivotal Partnership Agreement. This collaboration, announced on January 24, 2024, marks a milestone in the realm of maritime transportation, focusing not only on safety and crew welfare but also on the pressing need for decarbonization.

At the signing ceremony, Laure Baratgin, Head of Commercial Operations at Rio Tinto Shipping (Asia) Pte Ltd., and Hiroyoshi Kubo, Executive Officer of MOL responsible for the Iron Ore and Coal Carrier Division, sealed the deal, symbolizing a commitment to shared objectives.

The Partnership Agreement between MOL and Rio Tinto signifies a proactive approach towards addressing environmental concerns in the maritime sector. Building upon Rio Tinto’s DOO (Driver of Operations) program, designed to bolster safety and crew welfare in dry bulk shipping, the collaboration now extends to tackling the challenge of reducing carbon emissions.

MOL has long prioritized environmental sustainability, as evidenced by its “BLUE ACTION 2035” management plan. Central to this strategy is the ambition to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, outlined in the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2”. Embracing clean fuels and optimizing vessel operations are integral components of this roadmap.

Teaming up with Rio Tinto, MOL aims to drive operational and technical efficiencies while exploring opportunities for alternative shipping fuels. Leveraging their combined expertise, the two entities are poised to explore innovative solutions that align with their shared commitment to sustainability.

The collaboration between MOL and Rio Tinto underscores a collective effort towards greener maritime practices without compromising safety or operational efficiency. By prioritizing the reduction of GHG emissions in ocean transportation, the partnership sets a precedent for responsible industry stewardship.
