MOL, Idemitsu, HIF Collaborate to Forge Sustainable e-Fuel Supply Chain

Tokyo-based Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has unveiled a pioneering partnership with Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. and HIF USA LLC and HIF Asia Pacific Pty Limited (HIF), subsidiaries of HIF Global, aimed at developing a cutting-edge synthetic fuel (e-fuel)/synthetic methanol (e-methanol) supply chain, integrating CO2 marine transport. The agreement, encapsulated in a memorandum of understanding (MoU), marks a significant stride towards sustainable energy solutions.

Synthetic fuels and synthetic methanol, pivotal components of this collaboration, are slated to be manufactured by synthesizing green hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources and CO2. With a lifecycle designed to curtail carbon emissions significantly, the project is primed for rapid commercialization.

The joint endeavor is set to encompass several key facets, primarily focusing on feasibility studies:

  1. CO2 Marine Transport: Exploring the feasibility of transporting CO2 from Japan to HIF’s overseas synthetic fuels/methanol production plants.
  2. Supply Chain Establishment: Establishing a robust supply chain to ferry synthetic fuels/methanol produced by HIF at overseas production plants back to Japan.
  3. Efficient Marine Transportation: Enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of marine transportation for CO2 and synthetic methanol.

By pooling resources and expertise, MOL, Idemitsu, and HIF aspire to spearhead the decarbonization of both energy and transportation sectors while cultivating potential business avenues.
