MOL Becomes First Japanese Operator to Commercially Install Onboard CO2 Capture System

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced its decision to equip its LR1 product tanker, Nexus Victoria, with the innovative “Filtree System.” Developed by Dutch emission-reducing technology company, Value Maritime B.V. (VM), this marks the first instance of a Japanese operator commercially installing a CO2 capture system onboard a vessel.

The Filtree System is a multifaceted solution, boasting both a scrubber function, capable of removing 99% of sulfur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM) from exhaust gases, and a carbon capture and storage (CCS) function. It can separate and recover up to 10% of CO2 emissions from exhaust emissions. This captured CO2 can then be repurposed for various applications, including supplying greenhouses and synthetic fuel companies, contributing to a more sustainable ecosystem.

As part of its environmental strategy outlined in the “BLUE ACTION 2035” management plan, MOL aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, as detailed in the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2.” The integration of the Filtree System aligns perfectly with these ambitions, offering a tangible solution for carbon neutralization within the shipping industry.

One of the most significant aspects of the Filtree System is its potential to decarbonize existing vessels, which are often challenging to convert to next-generation fuels. By collaborating with VM, MOL is spearheading efforts to reduce GHG emissions from vessels and construct a comprehensive CO2 capture value chain.

The move towards a carbon-neutral society is a collective endeavor, and MOL is fully committed to playing its part. Through initiatives like the installation of the Filtree System and the development of the CCS/CCUS value chain, MOL aims to contribute to sustainable development, nature preservation, and ensuring a prosperous future for generations to come.

As the maritime industry navigates towards a greener future, MOL’s pioneering step underscores the importance of innovation and collaboration in achieving environmental sustainability.
