MOL’s LNG-Bunkering Vessel “Brassavola” Successfully Completes Maiden Bunkering Service

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) proudly announces the successful initiation of LNG bunkering services by its vessel “Brassavola.” This remarkable feat took place at the Port of Singapore on February 16, 2024, marking a pivotal moment in the adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a cleaner alternative in the shipping sector.

LNG for the Future

The LNG bunkering vessel “Brassavola” is a testament to MOL’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly maritime practices. Owned entirely by MOL and chartered to Pavilion LNG Bunker I Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of Pavilion Energy, the vessel is a vital player in the LNG fuel revolution. The bunkering service catered to a LNG-fueled bulk carrier, aligning with the global push for cleaner energy sources in the shipping industry.

Technical Excellence and Environmental Standards

Constructed at Seatrium Limited (formerly known as Sembcorp Maritime Ltd.) in Singapore and delivered just last month, “Brassavola” boasts the distinction of being Singapore’s first membrane-type LNG bunkering vessel. Equipped with the highest technical specifications and adhering to stringent environmental standards, the vessel stands as a beacon for innovation and sustainability in maritime operations.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

The rise in interest in LNG as a ship’s fuel is fueled by its potential to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by 25% to 30% compared to traditional heavy fuel oil. Additionally, LNG significantly curtails the release of harmful pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). As environmental consciousness grows within the industry, LNG bunkering vessels like “Brassavola” play a pivotal role in advancing the adoption of LNG fuel worldwide.

Global LNG Bunkering Presence

MOL’s commitment to LNG bunkering extends beyond “Brassavola.” As a part of the MOL group, the company owns a fleet of three LNG bunkering vessels, strategically positioned to supply LNG fuel at major bunkering ports across the globe. This strategic approach aligns with the increasing demand for LNG as a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to conventional marine fuels.

The successful bunkering service by the LNG bunkering vessel “Brassavola” is a significant milestone for MOL and the maritime industry as a whole. As the world navigates towards greener shipping solutions, MOL’s dedication to LNG bunkering reinforces its position as a leader in sustainable maritime practices.
