MOL Collaborates with Woodside, HD KSOE, and Hyundai Glovis for Liquefied Hydrogen Shipping Study

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) takes a step towards sustainable energy solutions as it partners with Australian energy giant Woodside Energy Ltd, South Korean shipbuilder HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (HD KSOE), and Hyundai Glovis Co., Ltd. of South Korea. The collaborative effort aims to explore and develop shipping solutions for the bulk marine transportation of liquefied hydrogen, aligning with the global shift towards lower-carbon energy sources.

Decarbonization Drive Fuels Interest in Hydrogen

With the world intensifying its focus on decarbonization, hydrogen emerges as a promising low-carbon energy source. MOL, Woodside, HD KSOE, and Hyundai Glovis are at the forefront of addressing the growing demand for the transport of liquefied hydrogen, foreseeing its significance in the coming decades.

Comprehensive Study on Liquefied Hydrogen Transportation

The collaborative project will delve into the intricacies of technology, safety, construction, operation, and economics related to a liquefied hydrogen carrier with an impressive 80,000 m3 tank capacity. The primary goal is to establish a robust liquefied hydrogen supply chain, particularly in Asia and other key regions. If the memorandum of understanding (MoU) materializes into a full-fledged project, the partners aim to have the vessel operational by 2030.

Greening the Seas: Hydrogen-Powered Carrier

Under the concept design, the liquefied hydrogen carrier envisions using hydrogen as its main fuel. This innovative approach is anticipated to make a significant impact on reducing CO2 emissions during the vessel’s operation. Liquefied hydrogen, although taking up only about 1/800th the volume of hydrogen gas, requires advanced technology for safe and efficient transportation, necessitating cooling to an extreme -253°C.

Leveraging Expertise and Experience

Woodside, HD KSOE, and Hyundai Glovis strategically sought out MOL due to its decades-long expertise in transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG). The company’s commitment to addressing decarbonization challenges aligns seamlessly with the goals of the collaborative study. The memorandum of understanding signifies the synergy of expertise and dedication among the participating entities.

In conclusion, this collaboration not only signifies a crucial step towards a greener maritime industry but also showcases the collective commitment of major players in the energy and shipping sectors. The prospect of a liquefied hydrogen carrier, powered by hydrogen fuel, underscores the industry’s determination to embrace sustainable practices and contribute to a cleaner, low-carbon future.
