MOL Delivers LPG & Ammonia Carrier, Aquamarine Progress II, to GYXIS Corporation

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has proudly announced the delivery of the LPG dual-fuel LPG/ammonia carrier, Aquamarine Progress II, to its group company, Aramo Shipping (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. The vessel, constructed by Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., represents a significant step towards sustainable shipping practices.

Aquamarine Progress II, equipped with dual-fuel capabilities, can operate on either LPG or conventional heavy oil. When powered by LPG, the vessel can achieve a reduction of approximately 20% in CO2 emissions and up to 90% in sulfur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM) compared to heavy oil. Moreover, the vessel’s specifications enable the transport of ammonia, an emission-free fuel anticipated to witness increased demand as a next-generation clean energy source.

The naming ceremony for Aquamarine Progress II took place on March 12 at the Imari Works of Namura Shipbuilding, with GYXIS Corporation’s President and Representative Director, Keiji Tanaka, officiating the event. This vessel, sailing under a time charter contract with GYXIS Corporation, will contribute to the stable supply of LPG to Japan.

MOL, in alignment with its “BLUE ACTION 2035” management plan, has prioritized environmental sustainability. The company aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 as outlined in the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2.” Aquamarine Progress II represents a tangible manifestation of MOL’s commitment to reducing carbon footprint and advancing sustainable shipping practices.

The vessel boasts impressive specifications, with a length overall (LOA) of 230 meters, breadth of 36.6 meters, and a cargo tank capacity of 87,119.30 cubic meters. Its delivery in April 2024 signifies a significant milestone in MOL’s pursuit of eco-friendly maritime solutions.

Aquamarine Progress II exemplifies the collaborative efforts of MOL, Namura Shipbuilding, and GYXIS Corporation in promoting environmental stewardship and fostering innovation in the maritime industry.
