MOL Embarks on a Maritime Tech Odyssey: Starlink to Revolutionize Communication

In a bid to revolutionize communication and tackle the escalating seafarer shortage, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has set its sights on the full-scale implementation of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite communication service. The ambitious move aims to enhance the work environment for seafarers on more than 200 ocean-going vessels under MOL’s management.

Starlink, renowned for its use of low-orbit satellites to deliver high-speed, low-latency connectivity, has already undergone successful trials on select MOL-operated vessels. These trials showcased an impressive up to 50-fold increase in communication speed, opening doors for seafarers to engage in video calls with family members and indulge in video content—an experience that was previously challenging.

The decision to deploy Starlink on 233 vessels is a strategic response to the critical shortage of seafarers plaguing the shipping industry. As of January 2023, there is a projected 10% shortage of seafarers globally compared to the required workforce. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, MOL is committed to improving the well-being of seafarers by addressing the shortcomings of the current onboard communication environment.

Seafarers often face time lags and capacity limitations for private communication with family and friends due to the general onboard communication environment. MOL acknowledges this as a pressing industry-wide issue, prompting collaborative efforts with Marlink AS to produce a white paper. The document outlines the challenges of current onboard communication, provides an overview of low-orbit satellite communications like Starlink, and forecasts future applications.

The positive feedback from trials and the pressing need to support seafarers prompted MOL to share their findings and encourage industry-wide measures. The white paper, available on LinkedIn, has garnered favorable comments and reactions, reflecting the resonance of these efforts within the maritime community.

MOL’s commitment extends beyond addressing the seafarer shortage; they aim to elevate the overall quality of seafarers’ onboard life. By leveraging satellite communication services, MOL plans to provide high-speed, low-latency connections at sea—an environment significantly inferior to land-based communication. Furthermore, MOL envisions promoting the digital transformation (DX) of maritime operations. This includes enhancing operational efficiency through real-time information sharing between vessels and land and providing comprehensive shore support in case of onboard issues.

In conclusion, MOL’s venture into Starlink technology represents a significant leap forward in addressing industry challenges. This tech-savvy approach not only aims to bridge the communication gap at sea but also sets the stage for broader advancements in maritime operations. The maritime community watches with anticipation as MOL pioneers this maritime tech odyssey.
