MOL Group Expands African Presence with Nairobi Warehouse

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and its subsidiary, MOL Logistics Co., Ltd. (MLG), have taken a significant step in expanding their global logistics network by opening their first warehouse operation in Africa. The newly operational Nairobi Warehouse, launched in July 2023, marks a milestone in the MOL Group’s efforts to enhance logistics services in Kenya and neighboring countries.

Nairobi Warehouse: A Strategic Location

MLG’s Nairobi Warehouse is strategically positioned for international logistics, offering the capability to handle food, medicines, and liquor. Located just a 15-minute drive from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kenya’s largest airport, and adjacent to Nairobi’s Inland Container Depot, it ensures efficient access to key transportation hubs.

Strengthening the MOL Group’s Presence

The MOL Group’s commitment to the African market extends beyond this warehouse venture. In addition to MLG’s Nairobi Warehouse, the Group operates a local subsidiary, MOL Shipping (Kenya) Ltd., and MLG’s Nairobi Branch, which provides ocean and air forwarding services to and from Africa.

In a strategic move, MOL recently entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with General Cargo Service Limited (GCS Velogic), the logistics subsidiary of Velogic, a member of the Mauritius-based Rogers Group. This partnership aims to offer comprehensive logistics solutions in Kenya and neighboring countries, encompassing forwarding, customs clearance, warehouse management, and land transport.

A Vision for Growth

The launch of the Nairobi Warehouse aligns with the MOL Group’s BLUE ACTION 2035 management plan, which emphasizes expanding non-shipping businesses in emerging markets, including Africa. With this strategic move, the MOL Group not only strengthens its footprint in the region but also reaffirms its commitment to pursuing opportunities for growth in Africa’s dynamic logistics landscape.
