MOL Group Sets Industry Benchmark with First-in-Japan IMO Standard Training Program

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) proudly declares its subsidiary, MOL Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd. (MOLMEC), as the inaugural Japanese training company to secure accreditation from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for its “Engine Room Resource Management—Leadership and Teamwork Training” program. This accreditation signifies compliance with the rigorous standards laid out by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in their Model Course 7.17 and Model Course 2.07.

The President of MOLMEC, Takashi Nakashima, was presented with the prestigious certificate by Naoki Saito, General Manager of ClassNK’s Maritime Education and Training Certification Department, marking a significant achievement in maritime education and safety.

Elevating Safety Standards

The “Engine Room Resource Management” (ERM) training program is tailored to fortify the resource management and operational skills of engineers, with a focus on Chief Engineers. Notably, it aligns seamlessly with the Ship Inspection Report Program (SIRE 2.0), a guideline established by the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF), a pivotal organization in the tanker industry.

MOLMEC’s commitment extends beyond its organizational boundaries, as it plans to make this program accessible to a wider audience of seafarers beyond the MOL Group. By doing so, the company aims to contribute to fostering the world’s highest standard of operating safety within the shipping industry.

International Recognition

The IMO Model Course 7.17 and Model Course 2.07 set the benchmark for seafarer competency standards in engine room duty. The former provides guidelines for developing training courses, aligning with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Code). Meanwhile, the latter outlines the standards for engine room simulator training, ensuring proficiency in engine room duty as per the STCW Code.

Advancing Sustainability Goals

MOL Group, cognizant of its “Sustainability Issues” or Materiality, identifies key areas for sustainable growth aligned with its Group Vision. The newly accredited training program contributes significantly to the realization of “Safety & Value – Provide added value through safe transportation,” one of the five sustainability issues outlined by MOL Group.

This strategic initiative not only positions MOLMEC as a leader in maritime training but also reinforces MOL Group’s commitment to advancing safety, competency, and sustainability within the maritime industry.
