Ocean Network Express Unveils Inaugural Fleet of 12 Methanol Dual-Fuel Containerships

Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd. (ONE) has inked Ship Building Contracts with Jiangnan Shipyard and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding for the construction of a pioneering fleet. This fleet comprises twelve 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships, with each shipyard tasked with building six vessels, all slated for delivery by 2027.

This momentous occasion marks ONE’s maiden foray into methanol-dual fuel vessels, a significant stride in realizing the company’s sustainable objectives encapsulated in their Green Strategy. The design of these vessels emphasizes flexibility and agility, seamlessly aligning with ONE’s dynamic global network and underlining their commitment to meeting evolving customer demands in the sustainable supply chain landscape.

In the current maritime climate, methanol emerges as a promising contender for emission reduction. The new vessels will boast cutting-edge technologies, including optimized hull forms, waste heat recovery systems, and bow windshields. Additionally, selected ships will feature an air lubrication system and shaft generator, aiming to enhance fuel efficiency and curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These innovations propel ONE’s ongoing efforts in decarbonization and align with industry regulations.

Jeremy, the CEO of ONE, expressed enthusiasm about the move, stating, “Our decision to invest in methanol-dual fuel vessels aligns with ONE’s Green Strategy as part of our key initiatives. The upcoming fleet is pivotal in achieving our goal of deploying the first alternative fuel ships by 2030, marking a significant milestone in our journey towards a greener and more sustainable maritime industry.”

Central to ONE’s Green Strategy is the ambitious target to achieve net-zero GHG emissions, encompassing Scope 2 and 3, by 2050. The transition from conventional fuel to alternative fuels stands as a key pillar in ONE’s Green initiatives, aligning seamlessly with Operational Efficiency, Green Investment, and Alternative fuels.

As the maritime industry navigates towards a more sustainable future, ONE’s investment in methanol dual-fuel vessels signals not just a strategic move but also a commitment to playing a pivotal role in reshaping the industry’s environmental footprint.
