ONE Sets Sail Towards a Greener Future with Wind Propulsion Trial

In a move towards a more sustainable maritime future, Ocean Network Express (ONE) has officially launched a trial to explore the potential of wind propulsion. Partnering with Dutch experts in maritime wind technology, Econowind, ONE aims to revolutionize the industry’s environmental impact.

Wind-Powered Technology

Following the successful completion of a factory test, ONE is gearing up to install two VentoFoil containers on the MV Kalamazoo, a 1,036 TEU feeder vessel operating between Pusan, Yokohama, and Honolulu. Owned by NORSE UK and operated by Goodwood Ship Management, Singapore, this vessel will be the testing ground for this innovative venture.

The VentoFoils, resembling airplane wings, are poised to become game-changers in fuel efficiency and emission reduction. With a design focused on harnessing wind energy, each VentoFoil is equipped with a smart suction system that optimizes airflow and maximizes thrust. Capable of generating up to 400kW of power, these foils have the potential to cut fuel consumption by an impressive 5%. What’s more, they are fully automatic, adjusting for wind speed and direction, and can be initiated directly from the ship’s bridge.

Sustainable Future

Hiroki Tsujii, the Managing Director at ONE, expressed the company’s dedication to environmental responsibility, stating, “ONE is committed to minimizing our environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.” This trial with Econowind stands as a crucial step forward in exploring sustainable solutions for the maritime industry.

Scheduled to kick off in January 2024 and extend over six months, the trial will be a meticulous study. ONE will closely monitor the VentoFoils’ performance, collecting data on fuel consumption, emissions reductions, and overall operational efficiency. The findings will play a pivotal role in assessing the long-term viability of wind propulsion as a sustainable shipping solution.

This collaboration extends beyond ONE and Econowind, encompassing NORSE UK, which shares a commitment to achieving ‘Target Net Zero by 2050.’ The partnership aligns seamlessly with ONE’s broader green strategy. This strategy encompasses various initiatives such as carbon management, operational efficiency optimization, exploration of alternative fuels and technologies, and community engagement in green building practices.

Charting the Course for a Sustainable Tomorrow

As the industry navigates the complexities of environmental responsibility, this trial promises to be a catalyst for change. The results will not only impact ONE’s future strategies but could potentially to transfotm how the entire maritime sector approaches sustainability.
