Orange Marine Takes Delivery of Cutting-Edge Cable Laying Vessel for Offshore Projects

In an exciting development for the maritime and offshore industry, Colombo Dockyard has recently delivered the state-of-the-art cable laying and repair vessel (CLV) Sophie Germain to Orange Marine. The vessel, designed by Vard, is set to revolutionize the maintenance of submarine cables, encompassing both vital fibre-optic telecommunication cables and inter-array power cables utilized in offshore wind farms.

The Vard 9 03 design is a result of fruitful collaboration between Vard and Orange Marine, which traces its roots back to 2012. Back then, Vard had been entrusted with the task of designing and constructing the cable laying and repair vessel Pierre de Fermat, a groundbreaking success that solidified the partnership.

The new CLV, Sophie Germain, has already set sail for France, where it will replace the esteemed vessel Raymond Croze in carrying out maintenance duties for submarine cables in the Mediterranean. This responsibility comes under the purview of the MECMA agreement, which underscores the critical role the vessel will play in ensuring uninterrupted connectivity and power transmission in the region.

The cutting-edge vessel’s key feature is its unparalleled versatility. Not only can it expertly handle the delicate maintenance of high-tech fibre-optic telecommunication cables, but it is also fully equipped to handle inter-array power cables used in offshore wind farms. This dual capability makes the Sophie Germain an invaluable asset in the modern era, where both telecommunications and renewable energy infrastructure are of utmost importance.

As the maritime and energy industries continue to expand and evolve, the demand for efficient and reliable cable laying vessels has surged. Sophie Germain, with its state-of-the-art technology and specialized design, is poised to meet this demand head-on. Its ability to lay offshore wind inter-array power cables will significantly bolster the development of renewable energy projects, contributing to a more sustainable future.

With the Sophie Germain joining Orange Marine’s fleet, the company solidifies its position as a leading player in the field of submarine cable maintenance and deployment. This addition not only strengthens their capabilities but also underlines their commitment to adopting the latest technological advancements for the benefit of their customers and the environment.

The delivery of the Vard-designed cable laying and repair vessel, Sophie Germain, to Orange Marine marks a significant milestone in the maritime and offshore industry. The vessel’s unique ability to handle both fibre-optic telecommunication cables and inter-array power cables positions it as a game-changer in the maintenance of critical underwater infrastructure. As the vessel embarks on its journey to serve in the Mediterranean, it brings with it the promise of improved connectivity and sustainable energy solutions for the region and beyond.
