Port of Bilbao Hosts Crucial Meeting for Intra-European Green Hydrogen Corridor Development

The Port of Bilbao recently played host to a pivotal meeting organized by the Netherlands business agency. This strategic gathering involved representatives from the Netherlands, Germany, and the Basque Country, aiming to propel the development of an intra-European corridor dedicated to green hydrogen.

Distinguished attendees from the Netherlands and Germany included representatives from their respective embassies, ports of Amsterdam and Duisport, the Chamber of Commerce, and prominent businessmen. The Basque delegation, led by Arantxa Tapia, the Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability, and the Environment, featured representatives from Basque Trade and Investment, the Basque Energy Agency, key companies like Petronor-Repsol and Iberdrola, and the Port Authority of Bilbao, which also graciously hosted the event.

The gathering not only facilitated discussions but also included an insightful tour of the Port of Bilbao’s facilities. Participants analyzed the port’s infrastructure, emphasizing its role in facilitating efficient production, transport, and logistics of green hydrogen, ultimately contributing to decarbonization and striving for net zero emissions.

This collaborative effort aligns with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on June 13, 2023, in the hydrogen domain between the Port of Bilbao, Port of Amsterdam, and later extended to include the Port of Duisport in Germany. The agreement envisions the supply of hydrogen produced in the Basque Country to vital industrial consumers in the Rhine-Ruhr region. Notably, the Dutch hydrogen ecosystem’s pivotal role was underscored, highlighting its involvement in distributing green hydrogen and synfuels from the Iberian Peninsula to Dutch and German markets.

This meeting holds particular importance within the broader context of international cooperation for a sustainable future. It builds on existing agreements and aims to foster a seamless network for the production, distribution, and utilization of green hydrogen—a key player in the global commitment to combat climate change.
