Port of Los Angeles Commends Shipping Companies for Emission Reduction Efforts

The Port of Los Angeles has acknowledged the proactive involvement of more than two dozen shipping companies in the Vessel Speed Reduction Program (VSRP). This program, which operates on a voluntary and incentive-based framework, focuses on curbing carbon emissions from ships navigating to and from the Port by implementing reduced speeds.

Under the VSRP, participating vessels are required to decrease their speed to 12 knots or lower when they are within a range of 20 to 40 nautical miles from Point Fermin. This strategic maneuver not only contributes to decreased fuel consumption but also plays a pivotal role in enhancing air quality by reducing harmful emissions.

Initiated in 2001, the program gained further momentum in 2008 with the introduction of financial incentives to encourage active participation from the shipping industry. The laudable results have been evident over time, as exemplified by the recent recognition of the initiative’s impact.

Diane Middleton, Vice President of the Harbor Commission, emphasized the paramount importance of improving air quality within the San Pedro Bay region. She remarked, “While the growth in cargo volume bolsters job opportunities, it remains imperative that we prioritize the well-being of our local communities. The voluntary engagement and sustained dedication of our partner companies towards fostering a cleaner and sustainable port environment are truly commendable.”

Middleton also underscored the collaborative efforts between the Port of Los Angeles and the San Pedro Bay Port Complex, as they jointly endeavor to establish a hub that operates with zero emissions—a significant leap towards a greener future.

In 2022, the VSRP made substantial strides by reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 31,000 tons, cutting down diesel particulate matter by 66 tons, and mitigating over 500 tons of nitrous and sulfide oxide emissions.

A noteworthy achievement came to light in the previous year, with 172 companies showcasing compliance levels of at least 90% with the VSRP’s regulations. This accomplishment translated into incentive payouts exceeding $1.9 million—a tangible testament to the commitment of these entities towards environmental conservation.

The recognition extended to shipping companies including APL, Chevron Shipping, CMA CGM (America), COSCO, and many others underscores the collective determination to drive positive change in the maritime industry. Each of these companies has demonstrated a conscientious approach to emission reduction, setting a precedent for sustainable practices.

This proactive endeavor towards emission reduction through the Vessel Speed Reduction Program stands as a shining example of how collaboration between industries and environmental initiatives can pave the way for a cleaner, healthier future.
