Ulsan Port Authority and Pacific Environment Collaborate to Decarbonize Shipping Ports

Ulsan Port Authority (UPA) has taken a significant step towards the decarbonization of shipping ports by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Pacific Environment (PE), an international environmental organization. This landmark agreement was sealed during UPA’s ‘Shipping Port Decarbonization Networking Reception’ on 17 April, held as part of Singapore Maritime Week.

The networking reception gathered a diverse array of stakeholders, including global port officials, representatives from shipping lines, and climate and environmental organizations from across the globe. The impressive turnout underscored the widespread interest and commitment to decarbonization within the maritime sector.

At the heart of the event was the signing ceremony of the ‘Agreement to Accelerate the Transition to Green Shipping Ports’, attended by Soon-yo Jeong, Vice President of Operations at Ulsan Port Authority, and Shannon Wright, Executive Director of Pacific Environment. This agreement signifies a joint commitment to spearhead the design and implementation of decarbonization policies for shipping ports in the Asia-Pacific region.

Under the MOU, both organizations pledge to collaborate closely on various initiatives, including the development of green shipping routes, policy analysis to address climate issues such as marine plastic pollution, and the promotion of eco-friendly fuel bunkering at Ulsan Port. Additionally, efforts will be made to establish safety standards and provide training for port workers, fostering a culture of sustainability and innovation within the industry.

During the reception, Soon-yo Jeong outlined Ulsan Port’s strategy for becoming an eco-friendly energy logistics hub, highlighting recent achievements such as the successful supply of green methanol to container ships. He emphasized Ulsan Port’s commitment to supporting the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) carbon neutrality goal and reiterated plans to further enhance infrastructure and cooperation with stakeholders to facilitate the supply of carbon-free ship fuel.

Ulsan Port’s groundbreaking initiatives in sustainable fuel supply have already garnered international recognition. In July 2023, it became the world’s first port to supply green methanol to a container ship, followed by the successful provision of green methanol fuel to an ultra-large container vessel in February 2024. Looking ahead, the port aims to construct a clean hydrogen and ammonia terminal by 2030, further solidifying its position as a leader in green port innovation.

The collaboration between Ulsan Port Authority and Pacific Environment marks a significant milestone in the global effort to decarbonize the maritime industry. By combining expertise and resources, these two organizations are paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future for shipping ports worldwide.
