Van Oord awarded EUR 200 Million Contracts to Strengthen Romanian Coast

Dutch maritime company Van Oord has clinched three significant contracts, valued at approximately EUR 200 million, to strengthen and secure the Romanian coast. The Administratia Bazinala de Apa Dobrogea-Litoral (ABA-DL) has entrusted Van Oord with the task of designing and constructing 6.7 kilometers of resilient coastline for the Romanian seaside resorts of Costinesti, Mangalia-Saturn, and 2 Mai. These projects will also focus on enhancing marine habitats through the implementation of artificial reefs and bio-structures.

This latest endeavor complements Van Oord’s ongoing projects in the region, including the one in Eforie. With this new contract, the total length of the Romanian coastline fortified by Van Oord now exceeds an impressive 26 kilometers.

In a bid to shield these popular coastal areas from the erosive forces of the Black Sea, Van Oord will embark on the design and construction of new groynes and beaches. This initiative will involve the removal and redevelopment of several existing breakwaters to pave the way for more eco-friendly alternatives. The construction of the groynes is slated to commence in 2024, following a 12-month design phase. Van Oord will utilize a trailing suction hopper dredger to restore the beaches, with the entire project anticipated to conclude in 2026.

Aligned with Van Oord’s commitment to making a positive impact on the environment, these projects will not only strengthen the coastline but also create space for nature conservation and recreational activities. As part of the undertaking, the value of marine habitats will be augmented through the incorporation of artificial reefs and bio-structures. The replantation of over 64 hectares of diverse seagrass and algae species on the seabed is poised to foster and enrich marine life. Similar successful initiatives have been implemented in earlier projects in the area, aligning perfectly with Van Oord’s overarching vision and strategy regarding sustainability and climate adaptation.

Van Oord’s latest contracts underscore the company’s dedication to both coastal protection and environmental preservation. The multifaceted approach, encompassing resilient coastlines, marine habitat enrichment, and sustainable practices, exemplifies Van Oord’s pivotal role in safeguarding precious coastal ecosystems. This contributes to a more sustainable and resilient future for coastal communities.
