Fugro, a global leader in geotechnical and environmental solutions, has been chosen to spearhead the mapping of coastal habitats along the entire Italian coast as a crucial component of the Italian government’s Marine Ecosystem Restoration (MER) Project. This pioneering initiative falls under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, aiming to revolutionize marine conservation and environmental restoration efforts in Italy.
The Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) has entrusted Fugro, in collaboration with Compagnia Generale Ripreseaeree (CGR), to utilize their advanced technology and extensive experience in coastal resilience solutions for the mapping phase of the MER Project.
Revolutionizing Marine Conservation
The MER Project focuses on restoring marine habitats, strengthening the national system for observing marine and coastal ecosystems, and mapping coastal and marine habitats across Italian waters, specifically targeting Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa seagrass meadows. Fugro and its partners will play a pivotal role in executing the mapping phase using a mix of cutting-edge methodologies.
Advanced Technology Deployment
Commencing in March 2024 and slated for completion by June 2026, the project involves the acquisition of hydrographic data through state-of-the-art sensors, including airborne lidar and imagery, airborne gravimetry, and satellite sensors covering an extensive 10,200 km². Additionally, vessel-based multibeam technology will span 4,000 km², while an autonomous underwater vehicle, one of Fugro’s state-of-the-art underwater drones, will cover 4,000 km of coastline for direct observation and ground-truthing of other datasets.
All collected data will be managed through VirGeo®, Fugro’s cloud-based Geo-data engagement platform, providing seabed and habitat mapping insights. This will enhance the local Government’s decision-making process for the protection of coastal marine habitats.
Government’s Perspective
Giordano Giorgi and Sante Francesco Rende, Project Director and Technical Director at ISPRA, expressed their enthusiasm, stating that the project aligns with the objectives of Mission 2: Green Revolution and Ecological Transition. They highlighted the project’s significance in protecting the territory, water resources, and restoring seabed and marine environments. The initiative is administered by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, with funding from the European Union’s Next Generation EU program.
Fugro’s Commitment to Environmental Stewardship
Mark Heine, Fugro’s CEO, emphasized the significance of the MER Project, considering it a milestone in marine ecosystem restoration. He expressed delight in contributing to environmental stewardship and climate resilience. Fugro’s Geo-data will support the conservation and restoration of Italy’s coastal and marine ecosystems, paving the way for a sustainable future and a safer, more liveable world.
