Van Oord’s Aeolus: First Turbine Installed at South Fork Offshore Wind Farm

Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel, Aeolus, marked successfully installing the inaugural turbine at the South Fork offshore wind farm. This achievement sets the stage for the realization of the first offshore wind project in the State of New York, aligning with the state’s ambitious clean energy and climate objectives.

Van Oord secured the pivotal role in this venture through a selection by the 50/50 joint venture partnership between Ørsted and Eversource. Their responsibility encompasses the transport and installation of 12 wind turbine generators (WTGs) for the South Fork offshore wind farm, situated 35 miles east of Montauk Point, off the eastern tip of Long Island, New York. Once operational, the 132 MW wind farm is expected to supply clean energy to power approximately 70,000 homes.

The offshore installation vessel, Aeolus, recently underwent a significant crane upgrade, featuring a new and extended boom on its existing crane. This enhancement, with a remarkable 133m long boom, equips the Aeolus to successfully install the latest generation of turbines designed for offshore wind projects. The installation efforts at the South Fork Wind project will receive crucial support from a fleet of American vessels, including barges, tugs, and other essential support vessels.

In collaboration with Crowley, a key player in the US maritime industry, the transportation of the WTGs from State Pier in New London, Connecticut to the offshore project site will be facilitated. Crowley, a maritime union employer, will leverage its US-flagged barge, Ocean Class tug, and Alert Class ship assist tug for this purpose. Members of the Seafarers International Union will actively contribute to supporting the project, leveraging Crowley’s extensive experience in the US maritime sector.

Notably, New York union workers are actively involved in backing the wind turbine installation at South Fork Wind. This support operates under the National Offshore Wind Agreement, an industry-leading project labor agreement between Ørsted, Eversource, and North America’s Building Trades Unions. Van Oord remains committed to fostering collaboration with local companies and stakeholders, ensuring the successful delivery of this pivotal project.
