Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) Announces Successful Completion of Inaugural Collective Tender

Singapore – Today marks a significant milestone in the global maritime industry as the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) declares the successful culmination of its inaugural tender aimed at achieving a remarkable 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This pioneering initiative, spearheaded by ZEMBA, witnessed enthusiastic participation from over a dozen esteemed members, including industry giants such as Amazon, Patagonia, and Nike, among others.

The highlight of this momentous occasion is the selection of renowned container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd as the winner of ZEMBA’s premier tender. In a groundbreaking move, Hapag-Lloyd will undertake the responsibility of delivering zero-emission shipping services, ensuring a substantial reduction in environmental impact compared to traditional fossil fuel-powered counterparts. This initiative is anticipated to commence in 2025, promising to revolutionize the maritime landscape.

According to Ingrid Irigoyen, President and CEO of ZEMBA, “Climate-leading customers of the maritime shipping sector are stepping up in support of zero-emission shipping, and the supply chain is responding.” She commended Hapag-Lloyd for its transparency, collaborative spirit, and commitment to innovation throughout the tender process.

Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, expressed pride in being selected for this pivotal initiative, emphasizing the company’s dedication to achieving net-zero ship operations by 2045. He reiterated the significance of collaborative efforts with organizations like ZEMBA in driving decarbonization efforts within the maritime industry.

In light of the evolving landscape of sustainable shipping, ZEMBA’s tender process has been meticulously designed to pave the way for future advancements in zero-emission technologies. With a keen focus on maritime e-fuels, ZEMBA aims to accelerate market readiness and unlock investment opportunities for the next generation of fuels and propulsion systems.

To ensure the integrity and credibility of this transformative endeavor, ZEMBA and Hapag-Lloyd will employ a robust book & claim system, facilitating transparent verification and allocation of environmental attributes associated with zero-emission shipping services. Additionally, insights gleaned from this initiative will inform the development of ambitious global maritime decarbonization policies, contributing to a more sustainable future for the industry.

ZEMBA’s commendable efforts have been bolstered by key partners such as Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub and Neoteric Energy and Climate LLC, underscoring the collaborative spirit driving sustainable innovation within the maritime sector.

As ZEMBA sets its sights on future endeavors, it extends an invitation to climate-leading companies to join forces in advocating for zero-emission fuels and technologies, thereby fostering a collective commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation.
