Aasen Shipping Places Order for Three New Hybrid Methanol-Ready Vessels from Royal Bodewes

Aasen Shipping has inked a deal with Royal Bodewes for the construction of three cutting-edge hybrid powered methanol-ready self-discharging vessels. The delivery timeline for these innovative ships is scheduled for December 2025, April 2026, and September 2026. This order follows the successful delivery of ‘Aasfjell’ and ‘Aasfoss’ in 2021 and 2022, further solidifying the partnership between Aasen Shipping and Royal Bodewes.

Vessel Specifications:

  • Length Overall (LOA): 119.95 meters
  • Beam: 15.85 meters
  • Draft: 7.50 meters
  • Deadweight (DWAT): 9,400 tons
  • Gross Tonnage (GT): 5,700
  • Net Tonnage (NT): 3,000
  • Main Engine: 2250 kW Wartsila 6L25

These forthcoming vessels will share a design lineage with their predecessors, but with notable enhancements. Notably, they will be equipped with a substantial battery pack, enabling peak shaving for both the main and auxiliary engines. Additionally, the cargo handling machinery will operate on electricity, reducing noise and emissions. When berthed at ports with shore power infrastructure, these ships can engage in emissions-free loading and unloading operations. The amalgamation of a state-of-the-art hull, battery technology, and variable frequency drive will result in significantly lower emissions and fuel consumption compared to similar vessels in the market.

Charting a Greener Course

The new vessels will hold a class notation as “Methyl/Ethyl alcohol fuelled ready”. This designation means that, once green methanol becomes readily available, these ships can be easily retrofitted to run on this environmentally-friendly fuel. In doing so, they will operate entirely emission-free, both in port and at sea.

Transitioning to emission-free operations represents one of the paramount challenges today. These vessels symbolize the collective commitment, shared by Aasen Shipping, to meet this challenge head-on. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, we aim to not only slash emissions but also curtail fuel costs and minimize carbon-related expenses.
