DB SCHENKER’s Next Gen eCanter Proves Itself in Challenging Lapland Conditions

In a compelling showcase of sustainability and innovation, DB SCHENKER, a global leader in logistics, has successfully operated two FUSO Next Generation eCanter models in Lapland, Finland. Despite the extreme weather conditions, these electric trucks have demonstrated their reliability and efficiency in the challenging Arctic climate.

Operating Under Extreme Conditions

The Lapland region, known for its severe weather, experiences temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius with snow covering the ground from October to April. In this demanding environment, DB SCHENKER deployed the next-generation eCanter, a battery-electric 7.5-ton truck, at its hub in Kuusamo and another in Oulu, 200 kilometers southwest.

Raino Mourujärvi, Head of Terminal Area at DB SCHENKER Northern Finland, embraced the challenge, stating, “I really wanted us to use the eCanter here and disprove the preconception that you can’t do anything with an electric truck in these weather conditions.”

A Daily Routine Without Cold Surprises

Sami Määttä, Terminal Manager in Kuusamo, not only manages the operations but also actively drives the eCanter. Having covered over 1,200 km in recent weeks, Määttä highlighted the flawless performance of the eCanter even in extreme cold. Charging directly inside the building, the eCanter efficiently manages its power while Määttä plans routes and loads freight.

Positive Surroundings and Drawbacks

The success of the eCanter in Lapland was notable, with the only drawback being the heating on the front wall of the box body running on a small biodiesel tank. This necessary provision ensures the transport of sensitive medical products in freezing temperatures. Määttä, however, emphasized his comfort, stating, “My comfort in the cab is taken care of – I’m always nice and warm!”

Future Prospects for Electromobility

Raino Mourujärvi, an advocate for electromobility, envisions a future where electric drives dominate. While acknowledging infrastructure limitations on long-distance routes, he pointed out the current use of an electric lorry commuting between terminals in Helsinki and Tampere, each equipped with powerful fast-charging points.

Powerful Cooperation and Sustainability Milestones

DB SCHENKER’s collaboration with FUSO on the eCanter dates back to 2018 for last-mile transport. The success story continues, with 52 FUSO eCanters now operational in ten European countries. Since its market launch in 2017, the eCanter has covered over three million kilometers emission-free, saving more than 2,000 tons of CO2. The latest iteration promises enhanced power, range, and flexibility, reinforcing DB SCHENKER’s commitment to sustainable logistics.
