Rhenus Group to Launch Green Steel Logistics Hub in Dortmund

Rhenus Group, a prominent logistics specialist, is gearing up to establish a Green Steel Logistics Hub at its Dortmund business site, aiming to revolutionize steel distribution with eco-friendly practices. The warehouse is slated to commence operations in autumn 2024, with a focus on transhipping and transporting steel in an environmentally conscious manner.

This initiative underscores Rhenus Group’s commitment to sustainability, particularly in the steel sector. The Green Steel Logistics Hub will serve as a pivotal point for companies involved in steel production, handling, and processing, offering them a greener alternative for their logistical needs.

The development of the Green Steel Logistics Hub aligns with Rhenus Group’s broader strategy of enhancing sustainability across its logistics operations. Measures include the modernization of existing warehouses, such as installing solar panels covering approximately 4,000 square meters to generate electricity for powering crane equipment, buildings, and charging infrastructure for electric trucks.

Four electric trucks have been ordered to facilitate last-mile operations, significantly reducing CO2 emissions in the Dortmund region and the eastern Ruhr valley. Leveraging the trimodal terminal at Mathieshafen port facility, Rhenus Group will optimize transportation routes, utilizing waterways for shuttle services, followed by electric trucks for inland distribution.

Michael Petersmann, Managing Director of Rhenus Port Logistics Rhein-Ruhr, emphasizes the comprehensive approach taken by Rhenus Group towards sustainability. He notes, “Most logistics specialists only consider one small cog in the supply chain wheel and make it ‘green.’ We’re adopting an all-round approach.”

Electric trucks will cover a radius of approximately 50 kilometers from Dortmund, charging at modern electric charging points within the Green Steel Logistics Hub. Petersmann highlights the significance of integrating sustainability into steel logistics, stating, “Steel isn’t the first thing that automatically comes to most people’s minds when they talk about ‘sustainability.’ But a great deal can be done.”

The project receives support from the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transportation, reflecting the government’s commitment to promoting climate-friendly initiatives in logistics. Funding is provided through the Programme to Support Light and Heavy Commercial Vehicles with Alternative, Climate-Friendly Drive Systems and the Associated Fuel and Charging Infrastructure.

Petersmann underscores the importance of governmental support in realizing sustainable projects, stating, “These kinds of projects are only feasible if state assistance like this is made available.” Rhenus Group’s Green Steel Logistics Hub not only addresses environmental concerns but also contributes to establishing climate-friendly supply chains.
