Ecowende contracts Van Oord to build most ecological wind farm yet

Ecowende, the collaborative effort between energy giants Shell and Eneco, has officially awarded the contract for the construction of the Hollandse Kust (west) lot VI offshore wind farm to Van Oord. The move signifies a significant step towards Ecowende’s commitment to a sustainable future for offshore wind energy, emphasizing positive contributions to the North Sea’s ecology.

Van Oord’s Role in the Project

Van Oord, as the chosen contractor, will play a pivotal role in various aspects of the wind farm’s development. Their responsibilities include the transportation and installation of foundations, laying, connecting, and burying cables between wind turbines, and the transportation and installation of the turbines at sea.

Offshore Wind Projects and Sustainability Targets

With global society aiming to meet renewable energy targets, offshore wind projects have become crucial. Ecowende recognizes the importance of constructing wind farms in harmony with nature as a fundamental condition for achieving these targets. Beyond minimizing the negative impact, the joint venture aims to implement ecological measures contributing to the development of wind farms with a net-positive impact.

Collaboration for Innovation and Ecological Measures

Ecowende and Van Oord’s collaboration extends beyond conventional construction tasks. The partners will work together on innovative solutions, large-scale mitigations, and ecological measures. Feasibility studies and solution developments will be a key focus of their joint efforts.

Cutting-Edge Noise Mitigation Techniques

Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel, Boreas, will be at the forefront of noise mitigation efforts. Utilizing a vibro hammer, an innovative technique using vibrations to drive monopiles to their required depths, Van Oord aims to minimize the construction noise—a pioneering approach for a Dutch offshore wind farm.

Eco-Friendly Scour Protection

Addressing the effects of erosion, Van Oord will deploy its flexible fallpipe vessel to install precise and efficient eco-friendly scour protection. This involves high-precision rock installation around the foundations, incorporating nature-enhancing components to stimulate a diverse habitat for marine life.

Wind Farm Overview

The Ecowende wind farm, situated approximately 53 kilometers off the Dutch coast near IJmuiden, is poised to have an operational capacity of about 760 MW. This substantial capacity will contribute to making 3% of the current Dutch electricity demand greener. Ecowende aims to have the wind farm fully operational and commissioned by 2026.

In conclusion, Ecowende’s choice of Van Oord as the construction partner for the Hollandse Kust (west) lot VI wind farm reflects a commitment to pushing the boundaries of sustainability in offshore wind energy. The collaborative efforts of these industry leaders are poised to set new standards, not only in the development of renewable energy but also in the preservation and enhancement of marine ecosystems.
