Euroports handles CO2 in Antwerp

The Belgian and Danish Governments have given the green light for the first-ever trial of CO2 storage in the North Sea. The groundbreaking Project Greensand will showcase the viability of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology through a successful pilot involving capture, transportation, and storage beneath the Danish North Sea.

The project involves storing CO2 in a sandstone reservoir located 1800 meters beneath the seabed of the Danish North Sea. The CO2 originates from INEOS BELGIUM in Zwijndrecht, and it is transported through the Port of Antwerp to the Nini platform, situated 200 kilometers from Denmark’s west coast. Euroports, based in Antwerp, handles the container loading.

The success of this project will pave the way for larger-scale permanent disposal of CO2. The Siri area off the Danish coast is estimated to have the potential to store up to 8 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030, making this a significant step towards achieving sustainable development goals.
