Fugro Introduces High-Tech, Low-Emission Uncrewed Vessels for Middle East’s Ocean Data Needs

In response to the Middle East’s escalating demand for oceanic data, Fugro, a prominent Geo-data specialist, has unveiled its latest innovation – the Blue Shadow® class uncrewed surface vessel (USV). This cutting-edge vessel, designed specifically for precise hydrographic mapping and bathymetry surveys, marks another significant step towards meeting the region’s burgeoning need for accurate maritime data.

The introduction of the Blue Shadow® follows the successful deployment of the Middle East’s first fully remote survey vessel in 2022. With infrastructure projects, port expansions, and coastal management initiatives flourishing in the region, there’s an unprecedented requirement for precise hydrographic data. Fugro’s Blue Shadow®, equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and surveying technology, is poised to fulfill this need efficiently.

By harnessing advanced technology, the Blue Shadow® can collect crucial data such as water depth and seafloor morphology with exceptional accuracy. This data not only supports the development of the blue economy but also aids in understanding and conserving the delicate marine ecosystem of the Middle East. Moreover, the vessel’s non-disruptive survey capabilities near existing offshore structures ensure efficient data collection, thereby reducing project timelines significantly.

Fugro’s commitment to environmental sustainability is evident through its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2035. The utilization of remote operations, such as those conducted by USVs, plays a pivotal role in minimizing carbon emissions. In fact, data acquisitions through USVs result in up to 90% fewer emissions compared to traditional vessel operations, while also reducing human exposure to hazardous environments. This eco-friendly approach underscores Fugro’s dedication to sustainable maritime practices and reinforces its position as a leader in the field.

Louis Burnard, Regional Director Marine Site Characterization Middle East and India, emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating, “With the Blue Shadow® navigating our waters, we’re not just mapping the seabed, we’re forging a path for safer, more efficient maritime navigation in our region.”

As Fugro continues to pioneer advancements in oceanic data collection, the arrival of the Blue Shadow® heralds a new era of innovation and sustainability in the Middle East’s maritime sector.
