Fugro, a global leader in geotechnical, survey, and geoscience services, has received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its ambitious emissions reduction targets. Fugro’s commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its entire value chain by 2050 has been endorsed, marking a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability journey.
The approval from SBTi validates Fugro’s near- and long-term science-based targets, which encompass all three emission scopes. These targets include an absolute near-term reduction goal for scopes 1 and 2, aiming for a 55% reduction by 2033 compared to 2022 levels. Additionally, Fugro has pledged to engage with its suppliers to ensure that 60% of them, by spend, set their own science-based targets by 2028.
Mark Heine, CEO of Fugro, expressed his firm commitment to sustainability, stating, “This validation by the Science Based Targets initiative underscores Fugro’s strong dedication to its purpose of creating a safe and liveable world.” He emphasized the importance of aligning decarbonization efforts with the 1.5°C global warming limit, highlighting Fugro’s role in driving sustainable practices within its operations and supply chain.
Fugro has been steadfast in its pursuit of carbon neutrality, as outlined in its 2020 roadmap. The company aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions for scopes 1 and 2 by 2035. Concrete steps towards this goal include the continued deployment of Fugro’s uncrewed vessel fleet and the conversion of the vessel Fugro Pioneer to green methanol, reducing emissions from maritime operations.
By setting science-based targets and actively working towards carbon neutrality, Fugro demonstrates its leadership in environmental stewardship within the maritime and geoscience sectors. The company’s commitment to sustainability not only aligns with global climate goals but also positions Fugro as a responsible and forward-thinking industry leader.
