Netherlands Embassy Explores Fisheries and Maritime Sector in Co. Donegal

Ambassador Maaike van Koldam from the Netherlanda Embassy Dublin and Agricultural Policy Officer Aoife Feeneyin recently embarked on a knowledge-building mission to Co. Donegal, delving into various aspects of the fisheries and maritime industries. The visit aimed to foster collaboration and deepen understanding between the Netherlands and Ireland in these crucial sectors.

One of the highlights of the trip was a meeting with Dominic Rihan, the newly appointed CEO of the Killybegs Fishermans Association. Rihan provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by fishermen, particularly in pelagic fisheries, shedding light on both local and national issues.

The delegation also had the opportunity to tour Killybegs Harbour, Ireland’s largest fisheries harbor, where approximately 60% of all fish landings occur annually. Harbour Master Fergal Hegarty and John Campbell from the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine showcased the significant developments and investments that have transformed the harbor in recent years.

At the Seaweed Company “Seaposium,” the delegation learned about the extensive potential of seaweed in the food chain, not only for its nutritional value but also its sustainability. A highlight of the visit was the tasting of “Seameat,” a product of the Dutch company, which recently opened a new facility in Downings, Co. Donegal.

The visit culminated in a meeting with Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, where common challenges facing the agricultural and fisheries sectors in both the Netherlands and Ireland were discussed. The delegation also attended the opening ceremony of “The Seaweed Company’s” new facility, marking a momentous occasion for maritime collaboration between the two countries.

The Netherlands Embassy extends its gratitude to all hosts in Donegal for their warm hospitality and looks forward to continued collaboration and future visits, fostering stronger ties between the Netherlands and Ireland in the fisheries and maritime sectors.
