Gebrüder Weiss Expands Its US Footprint with Acquisition of Cargo-Link

In a move to fortify its presence in North America, international transport and logistics giant Gebrüder Weiss has acquired Salt Lake City-based freight forwarder Cargo-Link, marking a significant expansion in the USA. The acquisition, effective February 1, follows Gebrüder Weiss’s recent establishment of new locations in Laredo, Texas, and Miami in the past year.

Lothar Thoma, a member of the Gebrüder Weiss Management Board overseeing the Air & Sea business unit, elaborates on the expansion, “We are continuously consolidating our presence in North America. With Cargo-Link’s services, we are targeting the logistics needs of small and medium-sized companies. We will continue to develop Salt Lake City in our network as a starting point for worldwide air & sea transportation with a focus on transpacific and transatlantic transports.”

Founded in 1976, Cargo-Link specializes in sea and air freight business segments and provides essential customs clearance services. The company, comprising 15 dedicated employees, operates a substantial 2,000 square meter logistics warehouse in proximity to Salt Lake City International Airport.

This move is part of Gebrüder Weiss’s broader strategy to cater to the dynamic needs of businesses, particularly smaller enterprises, by enhancing its network and service offerings. The expansion into Salt Lake City positions the company strategically for global air and sea transportation, with a specific emphasis on transpacific and transatlantic routes.

Gebrüder Weiss first ventured into the US market in 2017, establishing its own country organization. Since then, the logistics powerhouse has rapidly gained traction, evidenced by the continuous expansion of its network. The addition of Salt Lake City brings the total count of Gebrüder Weiss locations to eleven across the United States, complementing existing hubs in Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, El Paso, Laredo, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and San Francisco.

This acquisition aligns with Gebrüder Weiss’s commitment to providing comprehensive logistics solutions globally while strategically positioning itself to meet the evolving demands of the market. As the company continues its expansion trajectory, it solidifies its status as a key player in the competitive landscape of maritime, breakbulk, project freight, cargo, and logistics.
