Cochin Shipyard Secures Contract to Build Service Operations Vessel for North Star

.

Cochin Shipyard, based in India, has clinched a contract with UK-based infrastructure support company North Star. The agreement entails the construction of a cutting-edge hybrid-electric Service Operations Vessel (SOV).

Meeting Energy Demands

North Star, having secured a substantial contract with Europe and Germany’s energy giant, EnBW, is set to charter the newbuild SOV for a decade. The vessel’s primary mission will be to serve the “He Dreiht” wind farm, located off the coast of Germany, starting late in 2025. This wind farm is a linchpin in Europe’s ambitious energy transition initiatives, aiming to supply green energy to 1.1 million homes. The SOV’s role is pivotal in ensuring the wind farm operates consistently and efficiently.

Functionality and Design

Designed under the VARD 407 model, the SOV will accommodate 34 wind technicians and function as a mobile logistics hub and warehouse for the wind farm. Notably, the vessel will feature Voith Schneider eVSP propulsion and will be adaptable for the use of methanol as a fuel, aligning with decarbonization goals.

First Collaboration and Track Record

This collaboration marks the inaugural partnership between Cochin Shipyard and North Star. Cochin Shipyard secured the contract based on its impressive track record in constructing hybrid ships, delivering them promptly to various European operators.

This forthcoming vessel will be North Star’s seventh newbuild SOV since its foray into the renewables market in 2021. With ambitious plans for expansion, North Star aims to add 40 new SOVs to its fleet by 2040. The company has newbuild SOVs concurrently under construction in India, Vietnam, Romania, and Norway.

Industry Impact and Future Prospects

The awarded contract underscores the growing demand for specialized vessels catering to renewable energy projects. As the maritime sector embraces sustainable practices, vessels like the upcoming SOV play a crucial role in supporting large-scale ventures like the “He Dreiht” wind farm.

In conclusion, this collaboration not only signifies Cochin Shipyard’s prowess in constructing innovative vessels but also highlights North Star’s commitment to bolstering its fleet to meet the rising demands of the renewable energy sector.
