Last week, while the Golden Ray ship was being dismantled, another fire commenced with flames and thick black smoke pouring out of the vessel. The fire is now out.
As the picture show, smoke was pouring out of the hull of the Golden Ray cargo ship as firefighters hose down the remains of the overturned vessel on Friday, May 14, 2021, in Brunswick, Georgia.
The Golden Ray had roughly 4,200 vehicles in its cargo decks when it capsized off St. Simons Island on Sept. 8, 2019. The ship’s remains are in the water of Saint Simons Sound, off the coast of Georgia, and it has been the subject of a complex salvage effort for more than 18 months.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Michael Himes, a spokesperson for the St. Simons Incident Command, says the fire started as crews were testing fire suppression systems while preparing to cut into the third of the ship’s eight sections; four sections have already been removed. This is the first time that a major fire has broken out since the salvage operation began, and it dwarfs the fires that broke out during the ship’s capsizing.
