The HaiSea Wamis, fully electric harbour tugboat manoeuvre, has officially completed its first job since being delivered, marking the first time in Vancouver Harbour, an oil tanker escort has been completed by an all-electric vessel.

The HaiSea Wamis, the pioneering fully electric harbor tugboat, has made history by successfully escorting the Argent Iris, a massive 30,000+ tonne oil tanker, into Vancouver Harbour.

This achievement, occurring on October 18, 2023, marks the first-ever oil tanker escort conducted by an all-electric vessel, ushering in a new era of zero-emission ship escorts.

The HaiSea Wamis, a product of HaiSea Marine’s innovative fleet, is the first of three fully electric tugboats set to redefine the maritime industry. Designed by Vancouver-based naval architect firm Robert Allan.Ltd, this vessel signals a significant step towards sustainable maritime practices. When combined with HaiSea’s upcoming dual-fuel (LNG and diesel) escort tugs, the fleet is poised to become one of the greenest in the world.

These tugboats, once fully deployed, will embark on a voyage up the Douglas Channel to Kitimat, where they will be stationed. Their primary role will be to provide ship-assist and escort towing services to LNG carriers calling at LNG Canada’s new export facility, located in the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation.

HaiSea Wamis’ arrival in the summer of 2023 has garnered significant attention, giving a glimpse into the future of electric maritime technology, the vessel’s remarkable capabilities and the commitment to reducing emissions in the maritime sector.

HaiSea Marine, a joint venture primarily owned by the Haisla Nation in collaboration with Seaspan ULC, is uniquely positioned to lead in Northern British Columbia. The combined experience and expertise of both partners ensure that HaiSea Marine can offer responsible and dependable marine services in the region, further solidifying the success of the HaiSea Wamis and the promise it holds for a greener maritime future.

This achievement not only celebrates the successful debut of the HaiSea Wamis but also marks a significant milestone in the maritime industry’s shift towards sustainability. As this vessel paves the way for eco-friendly ship escorts, it represents a bright future where our oceans and harbors can thrive without harming the environment.
