HMM Signs MoU with Shanghai International Port Group on Clean Marine Fuel Bunkering

HMM, has inked a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) to bolster clean marine fuel supply cooperation. The focus of this strategic alliance will be on bunkering methanol and LNG (liquefied natural gas) at Shanghai Port, a pivotal hub in global shipping.

The primary objective of this MoU is to bolster efforts towards carbon reduction goals while fostering collaboration in promoting new energy initiatives in global shipping. By joining forces, HMM and SIPG aim to drive the transformation towards sustainable shipping practices, essential for the industry’s long-term viability.

Mr. S.W. Oh, Chairman of HMM (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., and Mr. Huang Haidong, Marketing Director of SIPG, formally sealed the MoU, solidifying the commitment of both entities towards a greener maritime future.

HMM’s ambitious vision includes achieving Net-Zero emissions across its entire business operations by 2050. A crucial aspect of realizing this vision involves the establishment of robust port bunkering infrastructure tailored for clean marine fuels.

The collaboration extends beyond Shanghai Port, encompassing key maritime hubs such as Singapore and Busan. HMM’s proactive approach includes the signing of new building contracts for nine 9,000 TEU vessels powered by methanol, alongside plans to operate two 7,700 TEU LNG-powered vessels by the year’s end.

SIPG, known for its commitment to green and ecological port development, has been a pioneer in offering bonded LNG bunkering services since 2022. The completion of preparations for green methanol bunkering at Shanghai Port underscores SIPG’s dedication to advancing sustainable maritime practices.

An HMM official expressed optimism about the partnership, highlighting the expansion of green fuel supply chains in China as a significant milestone. The official reiterated HMM’s commitment to pursuing environmentally friendly initiatives, echoing the sentiment of both companies’ shared vision for a greener shipping industry.
