In a dramatic early morning operation off the coast of Cork, Irish military forces raided the Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier M/V Matthew, unearthing a “significant quantity” of illegal narcotics. The raid, which took place on Tuesday, marks a significant success in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking on the high seas.

The Irish Defence Forces had been monitoring the vessel for several days as it made its journey from South America. The situation escalated when the Irish Navy patrol vessel LÉ William Butler Yeats fired warning shots in the direction of the Matthew, ultimately leading to a daring helicopter-assisted boarding operation.

Once the vessel was secured, it was escorted to Marino Point in Cork Harbour for further inspection. According to AIS ship tracking data, the Matthew had set sail from Willemstad, Curaçao, raising questions about the origins of the illegal cargo.

Authorities wasted no time in taking action. Reports suggest that three individuals have been apprehended in connection with the illicit drugs found on board. Furthermore, there is speculation that this raid might be linked to a recent trawler grounding incident that occurred just days prior.

Defence Forces Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy, commended the operation, stating, “This operation demonstrated the importance of all services of the Defence Forces and their ability to operate in the most challenging of conditions.”

Equasis data reveals that the M/V Matthew is owned by a single-ship company based in the Marshall Islands and changed ownership as recently as August 10th. The vessel’s recent history raises questions about its involvement in the drug trade and the extent of its connections to the criminal underworld.

This successful operation underscores the crucial role played by maritime security forces in combating drug smuggling on international waters. As the investigation continues, authorities will be working tirelessly to unravel the intricate web of drug trafficking networks and bring those responsible to justice.
