KR and HD Hyundai Join Forces for Cutting-Edge XR Ship Education Program

Korea Register (KR), HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI), and Hyundai Marine Solution (HD HMS) have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pioneer a ship education and training program utilizing extended reality (XR). The strategic agreement was sealed at HD HHI’s Digital Convergence Center (DCC) in Ulsan, South Korea.

The essence of this partnership revolves around the creation of a state-of-the-art virtual reality representation of ships. This will be achieved through the amalgamation of 360-degree footage of actual vessels and intricate 3D CAD models. Moreover, the consortium will curate ship trial content designed to revolutionize crew education and training services through the innovative application of XR technology.

HD KSOE is set to take the lead in developing advanced maritime training content, collaborating closely with HD HHI. This will involve integrating their proprietary digital twin solution, HiDTS, with KR’s ship familiarization education and training platform, KR-Real 360. Concurrently, HD HMS will play a pivotal role in delivering the cutting-edge training content.

Expressing optimism about the venture, KWON Byounghun, Executive Vice President, and Head of Digital Research Lab at HD KSOE, remarked, “Through the realistic ship education and training system developed in this collaborative effort, customers will be able to respond quickly to changes in onboard operating systems, such as digitalization and decarbonization.”

Kim Daeheon, Executive Vice President of KR’s R&D Division, emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating, “It is meaningful for us to develop a solution applicable to shipyards and shipping companies, leveraging KR’s capabilities in XR technology and HD Hyundai’s expertise in ship designing and verification. We will further enhance our technical support for customers, enabling the proactive utilization of the latest digital technologies.”

This pioneering initiative stands poised to revolutionize maritime training, enhancing adaptability to evolving industry landscapes. As the collaboration progresses, it promises to usher in a new era of efficiency and competence in ship education and training. Stay tuned for updates on this transformative partnership.
