Mark W. Barker, George Pasha IV, and Adam Vokac Honored with 54th AOTOS Awards

The maritime industry witnessed a celebration of excellence as the United Seamen’s Service (USS) presented the prestigious 54th annual Admiral of the Ocean Sea (AOTOS) Awards. The gala event, held at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel on December 1st, saw three distinguished figures—Mark W. Barker, George Pasha IV, and Adam Vokac—receiving the traditional silver statuette of Christopher Columbus, the first Admiral of the Ocean Sea.

In front of a captivated audience of nearly 600 attendees, LTG Kenneth R. Wykle, USA, (Ret.) and Chairman of the USS AOTOS Committee, highlighted the indelible mark left by these industry trailblazers. The recipients expressed their gratitude to family, friends, mentors, and the USS, addressing the challenges and opportunities within the logistics and supply chain sector.

Recognizing Contributions to the Industry

Mark W. Barker, President of Interlake Maritime Services, emphasized the vital role of the Great Lakes supply chain in his acceptance speech. He underscored its significance, stating, “The US Department of Homeland Security has said that if our Laker vessel supply chain was interrupted for six months, the entire North American economy would plunge into a recession.”

George Pasha IV, President and CEO of The Pasha Group, addressed the pressing issue of the maritime worker shortage. He advocated for increased investment in training programs and the lowering of barriers for entry into the seafaring profession. Pasha extended gratitude to hardworking mariners, acknowledging their heroic duties in ensuring the safety and timeliness of ships.

Adam Vokac, District and National President of the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (M.E.B.A.), focused on building a better maritime industry. He emphasized the dedication of American mariners and longshoremen during national crises, contrasting their commitment with potential challenges posed by automated alternatives. Vokac urged the industry to collectively dream big, tackle challenges, and work collaboratively to transform concepts into reality.

Supporting the Maritime Community

Proceeds from the AOTOS event contribute to USS community services abroad for the U.S. Merchant Marine, global seafarers, and U.S. government and military overseas. President Edward R. Morgan and Executive Director Roger T. Korner lead USS, with Barbara Spector Yeninas Associates serving as AOTOS Event Coordinator.

About United Seamen’s Service

In recognizing the achievements of Barker, Pasha, and Vokac, the AOTOS Awards continue to honor outstanding contributions to the maritime industry, reinforcing the vital role played by these leaders in shaping its future.
