MOL Initiates FSRU Operations for Indonesia’s Jawa 1 LNG-Fired Power Plant

TOKYO — Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has commenced commercial operations of the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Jawa Satu for Indonesia’s Jawa 1 LNG-fired power plant. This milestone marks Asia’s inaugural Gas-to-Power initiative utilizing an FSRU, a significant development in the region’s energy landscape.

The FSRU, owned by MOL through PT Jawa Satu Regas (JSR), a joint venture involving PT Pertamina (Persero), Marubeni Corporation, Sojitz Corporation, and other partners, commenced operations on March 29. The Jawa Satu FSRU will play a pivotal role in receiving LNG for power generation via ship-to-ship transfer operations, storing it, regasifying it, and supplying it to PT Jawa Satu Power. PT Jawa Satu Power, a collaborative effort between Pertamina, Marubeni, and Sojitz, operates a large-scale LNG-fired power plant in West Java with a generating capacity of 1,760 MW.

This venture signifies the inception of a “gas-to-power” paradigm in Asia, integrating power generation and gas-related facilities with FSRU technology. The electricity generated by the Jawa 1 power plant will be distributed to PT. PLN (Persero), Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, for a period of 25 years, ensuring a stable supply of electricity for the nation.

MOL’s involvement in this project underscores its commitment to facilitating a sustainable energy transition. Leveraging its extensive experience and expertise as the sole FSRU operator in Asia, MOL aims to actively engage in various segments of the clean energy industry, from upstream to downstream activities, beyond transport services.

The project aligns with MOL’s broader corporate vision of diversifying into social infrastructure businesses alongside traditional shipping endeavors. This strategic move is consistent with the “BLUE ACTION 2035” management plan, emphasizing the expansion of offshore and non-shipping ventures, as well as the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” focusing on low-carbon and decarbonized business expansion. By contributing to the sustainable development of society and environmental conservation, MOL endeavors to secure a prosperous future for generations to come.

FSRUs play a pivotal role in receiving, storing, and regasifying LNG, offering a cost-effective and rapid alternative to onshore LNG receiving terminals. With their capability to operate at sea, FSRUs facilitate flexible energy solutions, catering to evolving market demands.
