MOL President Takeshi Hashimoto Joins Panel Discussion at Expo

Tokyo—Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) continues to spearhead environmental efforts within the shipping industry, as evidenced by its recent participation in the World Ocean Summit & Expo 2024 in Lisbon. The event, hosted by Economist Impact, brought together over 1,000 global maritime leaders to discuss strategies for building a sustainable ocean economy.

MOL President & CEO Takeshi Hashimoto took part in a panel discussion themed “Pull Together for Greener Shipping.” Hashimoto highlighted the company’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, aiming for a 50% reduction by 2035 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. He emphasized MOL’s proactive approach to this challenge, which includes initiatives like utilizing wind energy, adopting LNG-fueled vessels, and implementing AI-driven operational enhancements.

Hashimoto acknowledged the significant impact of MOL’s approximately 800 vessels on global emissions, recognizing the difficulty in achieving ambitious reduction targets. However, he expressed confidence in the effectiveness of MOL’s multi-faceted approach, which he believes can lead to a 40-50% reduction in emissions in the near future. As a member of the First Movers Coalition, MOL is poised to drive industry-wide GHG reduction efforts.
