Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced a significant milestone in sustainable maritime technology with its Wind Hunter Project being chosen as a focal point in the “Tokyo Bay eSG Priority Project” for the year 2023. This innovative venture leverages wind power and hydrogen, epitomizing a zero-emission approach towards maritime operations.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government envisions a sustainable urban landscape that harmonizes “nature” and “convenience” in the Tokyo Bay Area for the forthcoming century. Through the eSG project, the integration of advanced technologies across “land, sea, and air” in the central breakwater zone is set to revolutionize renewable energy solutions and drive societal innovations.

MOL is set to spearhead the application of Wind Hunter technology, collaborating with strategic partners, and piloting experimental vessels in Tokyo Bay and its adjacent regions. This encompasses groundbreaking initiatives such as on-board green hydrogen production from wind energy, hydrogen storage facilitated by a dedicated carrier, transportation to the Outer Central Breakwater Reclamation Area under Tokyo Metropolitan Government, onshore hydrogen provisioning, and its utilization at the shorefront.

With a steadfast commitment to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, in line with the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” MOL aims not only to transform its own operations but also to catalyze a wider societal shift towards sustainability. The endeavor is not just about a single company’s mission; it’s a collective stride towards a cleaner, greener future.

Inaugurated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Tokyo Bay eSG 2023 Priority Project is a visionary effort that capitalizes on the expansive potential of the central breakwater area, uniting “land, sea, and air” to embed avant-garde technologies in society, offering a glimpse into the future of Tokyo. The project is anchored in three key themes: “next-generation mobility,” “cutting-edge renewable energy,” and “environmental improvement and resource recycling.”

MOL’s Wind Hunter Project stands as a testament to the maritime industry’s dedication to sustainable practices. It is a beacon of hope, illustrating that innovative solutions can pave the way for a cleaner, more eco-conscious future.
