Porto Chibatão Achieves Maritime Milestone with Liebherr’s LBS 800 Cranes

Porto Chibatão, Brazil’s largest private port, has reached another landmark in maritime operations with the introduction of four state-of-the-art LBS 800 barge-slewing cranes from Liebherr. This development marks a significant stride in port equipment technology, making Porto Chibatão the world’s first port to incorporate these massive cranes into its operations.

Technological Marvels Enhance Port Capabilities

The LBS 800 cranes, with a special boom length of 66 meters, emerge as the largest harbor cranes over a floating pier globally. This unique feature allows them to efficiently reach large freighters with a width of up to 23 rows of containers. To ensure better visibility for crane operators, a 9.6-meter tower extension has been added. The cranes are equipped with electric drives, enhancing performance with reliable, high-speed turnover while minimizing local emissions.

Partnership Pioneers Progress

This achievement is a testament to the successful and enduring partnership between Liebherr and Porto Chibatão since 2007. Porto Chibatão, the biggest private port and Liebherr port equipment customer in Latin America, boasts a fleet of 42 different cranes, including gantry cranes, fixed cargo cranes, and now the groundbreaking LBS 800 barge-slewing cranes.

Porto Chibatão’s Impressive Capabilities

Founded in 1987, Porto Chibatão plays a pivotal role in the logistical operations and economic impact on the regional economy. The port, spanning an expansive one million square meters, showcases a static load capacity of 40,000 TEUs, demonstrating its ability to handle substantial cargo volumes seamlessly. The newly introduced LBS 800 cranes, designed for container handling, boast a remarkable turnover of up to 35 containers per hour and can lift up to 104 tonnes.

Navigating the Global Supply Chain

Porto Chibatão’s berthing facility, featuring a 1,026-meter-long floating pier, facilitates the embarkation and disembarkation of ships from long-haul navigation and cabotage. With the capacity to simultaneously operate eight vessels with drafts of up to 20 meters, the port services vital shipping companies such as Hamburg Süd, Maersk Mercosul Line, Log-In, CMA-CGM, MSC, and general cargo ships carrying steel products and various goods destined for the Manaus Industrial Pole.

Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability

Jhony Fidelis, General Executive Director of Grupo Chibatão, expresses the port operator’s commitment to excellence and environmental responsibility. “These particular LBS 800 cranes from Liebherr are a perfect fit for our vision, as they offer high productivity and low emissions. We are proud to work with Liebherr, a company that shares our commitment to excellence and fostering environmental responsibility.”

In an ever-evolving industry, Porto Chibatão’s strategic adoption of cutting-edge technology reaffirms its position as a leader in the maritime, breakbulk, project freight, cargo, and logistics sector. As shipping and port logistics continue to be vital components of the global supply chain, Porto Chibatão’s innovative approach ensures its relevance and efficiency in the dynamic world of maritime operations.
