The latest reports emerging from Russia cast doubt on AirBridgeCargo’s ambitious plans to resume its operations. The cargo carrier had set its sights on relaunching its services in June, using two domestically manufactured Il-96-400T freighters. However, various flight tracking websites suggest that these aircraft, with registration codes RA-96103 and RA-96101, are currently inactive. Of the two, only RA-96103 is listed under AirBridgeCargo.
According to news service RBC, the airline has confirmed that it is yet to take delivery of the expected aircraft. Lessor Ilyushin Finance Co, which is a part of the United Aircraft Corporation, stated that negotiations have not been finalized and discussions are underway with other potential airlines.
Meanwhile, the general director of Russian carrier Red Wings, Evgeny Solodilin, revealed to Rossiya 24 that the company has plans to operate the Il-96s under the certificate of a cargo airline. Additionally, he mentioned that Red Wings is already contemplating operating cargo versions of the Tu-204/214 aircraft.
Before the conflict in Ukraine, AirBridgeCargo maintained a fleet consisting of 17 B747 freighters and a single B777F. However, due to the imposition of western sanctions, the carrier has been unable to utilize these aircraft for over a year. The IL-96s were intended to serve as a means for AirBridgeCargo to expand its reach to China.
The uncertainty surrounding the re-launch plans raises questions about the future operations of AirBridgeCargo. The outcome of the negotiations for the Il-96-400T freighters will play a vital role in determining the carrier’s path forward.
