CEVA Logistics Revolutionizes Supply Chain with Boston Dynamics Robots in New Los Angeles Transload Facility

Global leader in third-party logistics, CEVA Logistics, has unveiled its cutting-edge 135,000-square-foot transload facility in Los Angeles. This state-of-the-art facility strategically located near the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles aims to redefine supply chain efficiency and security.

CEVA Logistics is set to integrate robots from Boston Dynamics—Stretch™ and Spot®—to enhance operational efficiency and security at the facility. Stretch robots, designed to unload hundreds of boxes per hour, will be a game-changer, ensuring continuous operation while mitigating safety concerns associated with manual labor. Meanwhile, Spot robots will be deployed for site security, patrolling and safeguarding the premises.

The Los Angeles transload facility stands out as the sole transload facility in North America offering a cross-belt sortation device. With a remarkable capacity to sort 10,000 parcels per hour based on variables such as size, color, or preferred carrier, the facility caters to automotive, consumer retail, and technology companies. CEVA Logistics is pioneering the use of Boston Dynamics’ advanced technology, emphasizing its commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation in the logistics sector.

CEVA Logistics is set to be among the early adopters of Boston Dynamics’ Stretch robots, underscoring its commitment to leading technological advancements in the logistics industry. The deployment of One Network’s yard and warehouse management systems will provide end-to-end visibility, ensuring seamless operations for customers.

Beyond technological prowess, CEVA Logistics has designed the facility with environmental sustainability in mind. Initiatives include the installation of rooftop solar panels and the introduction of electric vehicles powered by renewable energy sources, set to be operational by January 2024. This commitment aligns with the growing emphasis on eco-friendly practices within the logistics sector.

Situated in proximity to two crucial gateways, the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles, the facility offers supply chain customers a strategic advantage. With access to CEVA’s drayage fleet and dedicated container chassis, customers can streamline the movement of products from port to warehouse, minimizing delays and resource bottlenecks.

CEVA Logistics anticipates processing 26,000 floor-loaded containers in the facility’s inaugural year, with plans to double capacity within three years. The transload facility, coupled with CEVA’s expansive network of warehouses, provides customers with enhanced control and flexibility over their supply chains.

Ashfaque Chowdhury, Managing Director for North America, CEVA Logistics, affirms: “The addition of our Los Angeles transload facility demonstrates CEVA’s ongoing commitment to expanding our services in North America.”

Kevin Blankespoor, SVP and GM of Warehouse Robotics, Boston Dynamics, expresses excitement: “We’re excited to deploy our robots at CEVA’s new facility. Stretch is designed to safely and rapidly unload containers.”

Joshua Bowen, Global Head of Ocean Freight, CEVA Logistics, emphasizes the strategic advantage: “CEVA’s ocean freight capabilities combine with our ground freight expertise to provide a fully optimized transload solution.”

In essence, CEVA Logistics’ collaboration with Boston Dynamics and its innovative approach to the Los Angeles transload facility reinforces its commitment to setting new standards in the logistics industry. As the sector continues to evolve, this strategic move positions CEVA Logistics as a pioneer in leveraging technology to drive efficiency and sustainability.
