DHL and Prada Group Join Forces for Sustainable Air Freight with SAF

DHL Global Forwarding has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with the Prada Group, marking the fashion giant’s inaugural investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) credits through DHL Global Forwarding’s GoGreen Plus service. This strategic alliance aims to revolutionize the air freight industry by significantly reducing carbon emissions.

The partnership’s impact is already evident, with the Prada Group reporting substantial reductions in CO2 emissions since teaming up with DHL in 2023. Approximately 4,500 metric tons of CO2e have been saved, translating to a remarkable 7% reduction in the Group’s total transport-related emissions.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) emerges as a game-changer in the quest to decarbonize the aviation sector. It offers a promising solution, slashing greenhouse gas emissions by a staggering 80% compared to traditional aviation fuels. What sets SAF apart is its origin; it’s derived from waste sources like used cooking oil and food waste. DHL adopts an innovative insetting approach, employing sustainable fuels directly at the source to curtail emissions. Air carriers employed by DHL utilize eco-friendly biofuels, leading to significant emission reductions. These reductions are then translated into certificates allocated to shippers.

Mario Zini, Managing Director of DHL Global Forwarding Italy, emphasizes the importance of collaboration in combating climate change, stating, “In today’s world, it is crucial to establish a clear roadmap for decarbonization that involves carriers, SAF manufacturers, regulators, and customers. We are proud that Prada Group has chosen to leverage the expertise of DHL Global Forwarding to form a partnership that we believe will drive the much-needed change forward.”

The Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) utilized by DHL for the Prada Group adheres to the rigorous standards set by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC). This certification assures consumers that the fuel is produced sustainably, without compromising environmental integrity. ISCC, a recognized certification system, advocates for sustainable, traceable, deforestation-free, and climate-friendly supply chains. It encompasses various materials, including sustainable agricultural biomass, biogenic wastes and residues, non-biological renewable materials, and recycled carbon-based materials.
