DP World Unveils Europe’s Largest Quay Cranes at London Gateway

DP World has proudly introduced Europe’s largest quay cranes at its esteemed London Gateway logistics center. These colossal cranes, each weighing over 2,000 tonnes, symbolize a substantial investment aimed at fortifying the nation’s trading prospects.

Arrival of the Giants

After a meticulous journey spanning two months from China, the mammoth quay cranes reached London Gateway, culminating in a successful offloading spectacle on 21st February. Their arrival marks a pivotal moment for the logistics hub, signifying a leap forward in its operational prowess.

A Glimpse into the Future

The deployment of these immense cranes underscores a forward-looking approach, with DP World ensuring their compatibility with the largest vessels currently navigating the seas. With an eye on the future, these cranes are designed to cater to behemoth 24,000 TEU containerships and even larger vessels on the horizon.

State-of-the-Art Technology

Equipped with cutting-edge automation technology, the quay cranes boast the ability to execute ‘tandem’ lifts. This innovative feature enables the simultaneous handling of two 40-foot containers or four 20-foot containers in a single maneuver, significantly enhancing efficiency and throughput.

Expansion Plans

The arrival of these quay cranes is just the beginning of DP World’s expansion endeavors at London Gateway. Two additional cranes are slated to join the fleet in early summer, augmenting the hub’s operational capacity even further. This development follows the recent introduction of automated stacking cranes (ASCs) and electric straddle carriers, underscoring DP World’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancement in the maritime industry.

A Vision for the Future

Ahsan Agha, Vice President of Port Operations at DP World London Gateway, articulated the strategic significance of these investments, stating, “At a time when the pressure to manage costs, maintain reliability and improve speed has never been greater, DP World in the UK has been building a unique array of assets and suite of capabilities to help our customers stay competitive in a fast-changing and unpredictable trading environment.”
