Fugro Transfers Self-Elevating Platform Amberjack to Japan for Offshore Wind Geotechnical Services

Fugro, a leading provider of geotechnical, survey, subsea, and geoscience services, has strategically relocated their self-elevating platform (SEP) Amberjack to Japan to cater to the nation’s burgeoning offshore wind industry. The move aims to meet the increasing demand for accurate Geo-data required for offshore wind farm developments in the region.

Tokyo Base for Streamlined Operations

The decision to transfer the Amberjack to Japan comes as a response to the country’s ambitious targets for offshore wind energy. With Tokyo serving as the new base of operations, Fugro aims to streamline its procedures and expedite mobilization to project sites. By reflagging the vessel in December 2023, Fugro ensures compliance with Japanese regulations, enabling a more efficient deployment process compared to foreign-flagged vessels.

Accelerating Offshore Wind Developments

Fugro’s Amberjack is equipped to deliver a comprehensive suite of geotechnical services essential for offshore wind projects. These services include geotechnical borehole drilling, high-quality sampling, and a range of in situ tests such as downhole cone penetration tests (CPTs) and standard penetration tests (SPTs). The vessel also offers downhole geophysical logging for preliminary and detailed geotechnical surveys, along with cable route surveys.

Meeting Japan’s Renewable Energy Goals

Junichi Kuwamura, Fugro’s Country Manager for Japan, emphasizes the significance of this strategic move in light of Japan’s renewable energy aspirations. With the Japanese government targeting significant offshore wind capacity expansions, Fugro’s Geo-data solutions play a pivotal role in supporting the nation’s energy transition. Kuwamura highlights the importance of leveraging innovative assets like the Amberjack to accelerate the development of offshore wind farms in Japan.

Driving Towards a Sustainable Future

The transfer of Fugro’s Amberjack emphasises the company’s commitment to sustainability and renewable energy. By providing essential Geo-data services, Fugro contributes to the realization of Japan’s renewable energy goals, aiming to make renewable energy the primary source of power in the country. As offshore wind projects continue to gain momentum worldwide, investments in specialized assets like the Amberjack are essential for driving progress towards a sustainable future.
