GEG Completes Fabrication of Crucial Liner Assemblies for Hinkley Point C Project

Global Energy Group (GEG) has achieved a significant milestone in the construction of EDF’s Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant project. The completion of the fabrication and load-out of the final two liner assemblies marks a crucial step in the development of the plant’s cooling system, vital for the circulation of water to the two nuclear reactors.

The intricate logistics involved in this feat cannot be underestimated. The initial phases of the project commenced in 2019 and were characterized by extensive collaboration with the client, Balfour Beatty, and designers. Practical input was provided to refine design concepts, ensuring seamless development. Test rigs were fabricated by GEG to trial the manufacture of unique components, serving to validate the design’s effectiveness.

A staggering 3,200 tonnes of steelwork were skillfully crafted by GEG, with special attention to the liner cap support unit assemblies. These critical elements were meticulously made from forged, welded, and machined super duplex material, demonstrating the company’s commitment to precision engineering.

The manufacturing process took place at GEG’s state-of-the-art facilities in Invergordon and the port of Nigg. These locations not only offer the necessary infrastructure but also showcase GEG’s dedication to regional growth and employment.

The complexity of transporting such massive and sensitive equipment should not be overlooked. After being crafted to perfection, the liner assemblies were safely loaded onto a BigLift heavylift vessel at the port of Nigg. From there, they embarked on their journey to the Hinkley Point C project site.

The Hinkley Point C project represents a landmark endeavor, as it will provide a substantial portion of the UK’s energy needs while minimizing carbon emissions.
